The lost original seems to have been based on a drawing after Leonardo da Vinci. It was probably intended to satirise old women who try inappropriately to recreate their youth, rather than as a portrait of a specific person.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Tenniel">John Tenniel's</a> drawing of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Alice_par_John_Tenniel_32.png">Duchess</a> in <i>Alice in Wonderland</i> was based on this, I heard.
