description:
there are several layers of hand cut Mylar over sheer handwoven cotton piece fabric. The cut work is inspired by that of a map and decayed leaf. This fabric has been cut in a way that mimics the Mylar, however, some areas of the cutting are stitched tightly closed, some are stitched looser, some have been stitched then pulled apart, and some just remain open. Underneath all of these layers is silk chiffon, which has been hand painted with dusty rose and chino dye. These colors were chosen because they are warm colors and reminiscent of the internal space of my mind. This piece is a sculptural landscape of my brain, which I see as being a vast world filled with my memories and thoughts. I want to invite people inside, but at the same time I want them to stay away. Everyone has memories or thoughts that they push deep inside of them, the Mylar acts as a way to make it harder to peer inside - a barrier. It also acts as a form of distraction, while at the same time providing a fragile layer of protection. It is as if it is a cocoon that is sheltering that internal space. The size of the piece is figurative, it is meant to be larger than my own mind. It is a depiction of my mind, which really is a depiction of who I am - a person that doesn-t let anyone get too close. There are shadows that act as another layer of distraction. They may invite the viewer to peer inside, but also make them focus on other aspects of the piece. There are areas that can-t be accessed, they are stitched tightly, because I am not ready to share. I am controlling the viewer by not letting them access the entire structure. Then there are areas that are completely open, and although it may seem that it could be an open wound, it is like a vein that is open and allowing blood to flow. I am allowing the viewer to access that open channel.
