UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts student Anser Shaukat, of Pakistan, was selected by the U.S. Department of State as one of five Fulbright Foreign Students to join the 2014 Millennial Trains Project (MTP). Anser is participating in the second MTP voyage across the United States August 7-17, 2014 as an enrichment component of the Fulbright Foreign Student exchange program. The MTP provides participants an in-depth understanding of life in the United States and opportunities to build leadership, social entrepreneurship, and communication skills while travelling by train from Portland, Oregon, to New York, New York. Anser Shaukat is an artist, designer and a story teller from Karachi, Pakistan, currently pursuing his MFA in Illustration at UMass Dartmouth. His work focuses on exploring and illustrating the cultural narratives that inhabit a city through the exploration of memories and experiences. His work is inspired by a desire to capture ordinary moments that have crystallized over the years into treasured souvenirs. Through an artist book, he intends to explore the diverse cultural landscape of the cities along the MTP route and what it means to be part of an urban culture. He will conduct interviews at art centers and local universities and colleges in each community to draw out both the diversity and the similarities that binds human beings. This digital mural expands on his Fulbright project of presenting his home city, Karachi, through visual narrative. Anser will be joined by students from University of Iowa, Brandeis University, School for International Training Graduate Institute, and Georgia Institute of Technology. All five Fulbright Students will post personal blogs and social media during the trip. To follow updates on the students during their voyage, those interested can visit their blog, or search for #MTPTrain and #Fulbright on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. Anser will wil post on social media (www.Twitter.com/ansershock, www.instagram.com/ansershock), his own personal blog (www.acupofuncertainty.wordpress.com) and the Fulbright blog http://blog.fulbrightonline.org/category/fmtp/.
