Defining sexuality is an almost impossible task. There are so many factors that contribute to the expression of our sexual identities. Personal, biological, and cultural factors all shape the nuances of human sexuality. To this point, I think that sexuality can be defined as a longing for an intimate connection with another person. Too often the labels of "gay," "straight," or "bi" are used in order to try and categorize the fluidity of sexuality. In the search to find this physical and emotional connection, a conflict arises between our desires to express and/or to conceal our sexual urges based on personal and cultural factors. I want the viewer to become engaged with the sensual qualities of my ceramic sculptures. My forms reference the human body and are teasingly provocative, poking outward to explore their surroundings, but shy and hesitant at the same time. In light of cultural misunderstandings, I believe there is a sense of vulnerability and self-consciousness that arises in humans when examining our
