I drew this self-portrait in the frontally view and turned the body to the left slightly. The figure sinks into the watery atmosphere. I colored some area around the figure with the pastel, which blends the pattern and the portrait layers, also suggesting, space around the portrait. I prepared the blue paper surface with gesso. Because of the gesso texture, the pencil line work will not blend to each other and show as mark making. I put on many marks and built a sense of vertical marks across the whole figure. In this way, I tried to bring the drawing to have a sense of upward flow. I also tried to give the sense of a 'porcelain skin surface' to the figure through the gesso texture. I designed some visual connections between the pattern and portrait layer in this drawing. The butterfly hides behind the floral pattern, the little girl is the cartoon version of the portrait hiding in the blossom lotus group.
