description:
|
"Freight Forward" represents paper in this installation of sculptural pillars. Hand drawn images are laminated to salvage cardboard, sliced and woven into a tall basket-like columnar form. Cardboard was selected as the primary material echoing the dominant use packaging for transport and marketing. The art of paper and weaving are ancient technologies and this sculpture brings the form into the contemporary art field. The pattern of dark to light is reminiscent of rising smoke. At the top of the form, trails of raw cardboard rise above the paper to reveal the truth of the material - cardboard. Care was taken to show the corrugated edges of the material beneath the drawings. The drawings were selected for their tonality and marks but also of reminders of moments past. The figurative images apparent in the drawings become abstracted in the woven form. Obscured figures in the woven form both imply our hand in creating the Anthropocene, the geologic period in which the human activity has influenced the climate and environment. The obscured figures echo our fragmented self-awareness around our contributions to degraded environments.
