Smaller Works. Coupled with these large paintings is a set of smaller alla prima studies whose execution represents more closely my goal for the paintings' technical narrative. The more obvious brushstrokes standing on their own acknowledge this path to legitimate authenticity that the Abstract Expressionists institutionalized. The content narrative, however, is less distilled, more domestic and more intimate and therefore conjures a different set of responses that are preparatory to the larger ideas of the larger paintings. These content responses include the phenomenology of the domestic space and the iconography of furniture and windows, which serves to cloud the main intention which is to focus on the light on the figure. The light of the painting becomes representational of natural light only. Their scale and setting elicit readings of intimacy, isolation, and perhaps illicit access. Of these, Window Wall Back and Window Wall come closest to being transitional works to the larger paintings because they are stripped of many signifiers and the compositions more readily read abstractly.
