description:

Light Matter 2. The anonymous figure is recumbent and parallel to the horizontal axis of a cruciform shadow. The eye travels along the implied line between light and shadow across the landscape/body. There is more balance between the figure commanding its own space and the viewer commanding the pictorial space than in Light Matter 3 and Light Matter 4. The painting is curated similar to the one above. The pose of the figure is less open to oppressive interpretations. While the face is masked to thwart curiosity about identity, the crossed legs show self-protection and agency and the vulnerably exposed abdomen is uninhibited, unaware of harm.
