The space between the viewer and the sitter reveals the intricate relationship between the artist and the sitter. I made a conscious choice to include the distance between Annie and me ? our relationship fluctuates between closeness and a guarded distance. The space that was chosen is approachable and inviting, but we have a ways to traverse in order to fully grasp Annie. Annie is surrounded by art created by other artists in the familiar home of friend, Carla Jimison. This painting is unique because Annie has found a place that provides the comfort she needs to truly be Annie in a place that is not hers. The light strikes in from the left and illuminates the space, highlighting the warmth of the environment. Annie meets our eye with a strong observant eye, she shows conviction and poise in a space that strengthens her confidence. Deciding to zoom out in the composition has created a balance between the space and the sitter. This compositional device highlights the character of the space and highlights how it has become an extension of Annie?s personality.
