Since becoming a mother, Ashleigh has found new strength and confidence. In order to illustrate this her gaze meets the viewer?s head on, allowing the viewer to meet with a confident person, who is comfortable in her setting. The space is the enclosed sun porch of Ashleigh?s home in Michigan. We are welcomed in by the warmth of the hardwood floors and the inviting sunlight. The decision to saturate the colors in this painting was made in order to highlight the vibrancy of Ashleigh?s personality ? the hues invite the viewer in the painting, allowing a visceral entrance into the portrait. I have chosen to highlight a lot of earthy hues in this piece to evoke the colors found in nature. The idea to saturate Ashleigh?s shirt is similar to the way cardinals project a strong color into a setting, highlighting the beauty of the natural world but using Ashleigh and her home as the setting and the characters.
