This painting highlights the nature of the relationship I have with myself. A blue hood hides my face from the viewer while the hands remain up suspended in a defensive position. This gesture reinforces the complexities of the relationship between the artist and the model. The blue is representative of the Virgin Mary, symbolizing the divinity of an individual. This idea of individual divinity is taught heavily throughout my faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The natural light enters through the left and creates a symbolic halo of light, echoing the iconography of earlier Christian portraits. The work is deeply personal, dealing with relationships of worthiness in the faith and theological concepts that have formed the basis of my moral system throughout my life. The concept of the work is to represent someone authentically in a specific moment though my own eyes. The symbols in the painting facilitate undercurrents in my own perception of myself through the lens of a camera and through my faith. The dead plant is a reminder of my mortality, something I have only started to comprehend. This representation of memento-mori becomes another reason my face is shrouded, I am not yet ready to face my own mortality and becoming a father has reminded me of that inevitability. The small red box is reminder of the blood, another symbol in Christianity, again, highlighting my mortality and serving as a reminder of my existence here on this Earth. The setting for this piece is a new apartment my family and I moved to when our son was old enough to crawl. The apartment was just downstairs from our previous place, familiar but still foreign to me, which is a description I would use to describe how I have portrayed myself. There is a familiarity in this portrayal, but at the same time I have used a lot of different devices to distance that familiarity.
