description:
|
This work makes visual reference to aged architectural structures such as grain mills, temples and office buildings. It also alludes to natural structures such as canyons, buttes, the desert, and the physiology of the human body. All these structures communicate a sense of honesty, memory, and time. Both geological features and the human body communicate through their appearance the truth of their lives. The monumental forms I use have an existential presence which can give a feeling of importance and permanence. But they also show the passage of time and that they are in a process of change, and therefore non-permanent. The work is discussed in relationship to Antony Gormley, Stephen De Stabler, and Torbjrn Kvasb. A conceptual connection is made with both Eastern and Western Philosophy; mainly in relation to existentialism and the Vedic Science, the yogic teaching passed down from Shankara. Daniele Rhodes is sourced for material science. The concept of deterioration and regeneration, whether in the structure of a building, a doctrine, a cultural identity, a language or a mountain range is a central tenet of the work. Acknowledging that everything is in a state of decay but also in a state of becoming. Within the work there is a structure that can be seen folding in on itself and deteriorating as it continuously shifts into something new. Similarly, this applies to a folding sense of the self, the multivariate nature of being witness to ones own experience, on an innate level of consciousness. Within this conceptual observation, many different ideas, paradoxes, and questions emerge for investigation.
