Fat Bodies Starve, Too pays homage to the moment in my life I first realized that what I'd called "dieting" for so many years, was an ED in disguise. The first time I talked about it, the almost sarcastic words I uttered were strangely unfamiliar despite their obviousness, fat bodies starve, too. A thin skin abaca draped over colorful balloons creates this large, round body suspended in space full of color, full of celebration, full of life. I documented the body each day as the balloons popped and shrunk, the paper collapsing and deforming along with it. I watched as the joy, celebration and life disappeared from the body until there was nothing left but the sunken shell of a (still) large, disturbingly empty body. I suffered a similar fate in my self-imposed, culturally sanctioned starvation, and through this work I bore witness to that experience. This personification of starvation is my recognition of that suffering both my own and that of countless others of all shapes and sizes who suffer similar experiences every day. It is my acknowledgment of the experience, forgiveness of the pain, and permission to refill that empty body with the joy, gratitude and self-love it deserves.
