"Our final show of Fall 2006 semester, "RE:figure: gods + monsters," is a compelling show of seven national artists who make use of the human figure as subject," said Gallery Director Jennifer Pepper. "The theme of this highly charged visual show is the way in which each artist approaches the subject, illustrating the myriad interpretations and perceptions of the human condition identified as social creature, as hunter, as mother, as lover, as son, street warrior, cultural architect, mythological messenger, to name only a few. Some artists adhere strongly to painting traditions, while others make use of 3-D media that straddle walls and sit on top of intimate shelving. Godeke, Jason

American

Jason Godeke, a native of Northern California spent his junior year of high school in The Netherlands, where his interest in drawing and painting first took shape. He received a bachelor of arts degree in studio art from Yale College in New Haven, and his master of fine arts degree in painting at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He has been represented by the R.B. Stevenson Gallery in San Diego, Calif, and is currently an assistant professor of drawing and design at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania. He wrote, "In my paintings I explore theatrical narratives. I find themes in personal experience (e.g. family life, my work as an emergency medical technician), myths, and historical events (I did a series on hate-crime murders of gay men, prompted by the Matthew Shephard case). I am interested in creating a tension between a traditional, attractive form and specific, sometimes disturbing subject matter. The challenge for me is to bring contemporary relevance to a timeworn mode of representation."

"Jason K. Godeke paints human heads on action-figure bodies. The faces in his works, delicately molded in muted tones of oil paint, are believable as people. But these realistic heads are hooked onto robot bodies with poseable wrist, hip and knee joints. Compressed into small square canvases with constricting black frames, they seem like genuine personalities trapped inside stiff, generic bodies. Mr. Godeke, a professor at Bloomsburg University in Bloomsburg, Penn., says he is intrigued by toy figures because they "lie somewhere between person and thing." Another of his series shows toy soldiers posing in front of benign objects. In "Stand Off Before Pumpkin Bomb," a toy World War II soldier faces off with a toy Roman warrior in front of a giant, looming pumpkin. The artist seems to offer the possibility of peace in a world fraught with violence."
