artist_biographical note:
JAMES ALAN EDWARDS, Visual Artist As a teacher of the art of illustration, I engage in the business of thinking by drawing. I am in the business of the eyes and the hand, of painting too, of observation and imagination, of inspection and introspection, of analysis and synthesis, of advanced doodling, of communication, the business of visual language, of texts and graphic translation, of the metaphor, of rectangular frames, of representation and abstraction, of efficiency and organization, of conceptualization, of storytelling, of facts and of fantasy, of reportage and right brain meanderings, of logic and of play, of sources and settings, of the contemporary and the antique, of the picture plane, composition and spatial order, of linear and atmospheric perspective, of proportion and scale, of figural anatomy and gesture, of the mechanics of the face, of stylization, of surrealism, cubism, impressionism, expressionism, primitivism, symbolism, illusionism, photorealism and postmodernism (especially ironic self-reference), of subtlety and of impact, of preliminary and secondary research, of variations and revisions, of thumbnailing, rough and tight sketching, and of polished final art. I am in the business of the principles of design (line, form, shape value, color, texture and pattern), of sequencing, of silhouettes, synopsizing and serialization, of drama, passion and humor, of character development, of exaggerations and distortions, of personalities and personas, of costume design, of illumination, the business of portraiture, the still life, the landscape, architectural rendering and the metaphysical plane, of watercolor, acrylics, pastels, graphite, gouache, inks, mixed-media and collage, of the camera, the computer, the brush, the pencil and the pen, of sketchbooks, of canvas and fine papers, of the poster, of storyboards, of the editorial, and the CD cover, of advertising, banners and billboards, of books, of maps, murals and the web, of entertainment, of instruction and sometimes provocation. I am in the business of things personal and commercial, of the evolution and maturation of the individual voice, of exhibition and of publication, of catalogues, curation and contracts and of advising, of discussions, of seminars, and of public speaking. I am in the business of portfolios, the business of the critique, of specifications and of deadlines, of metamorphosis, of self-promotion, and of collaboration and collegiality. As a teacher of art, I ultimately engage in the delicate business of inspiration. As an artist I engage in these things too. These are, in large part, the means by which I earn a living and they are the very same by which I live my life. James Alan Edwards, February 8, 2013
