UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts proudly announces its upcoming, invitational alumni exhibition entitled Holding the Line in the Crapo and University Galleries at the Star Store Campus in historic Downtown New Bedford. This diverse artistic showcase represents the recent work from ten alumni of the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Fibers; these artists represent a vibrant community of makers, all of whom continue to produce masterful studio work in an exciting range of media. The curator, Charlotte Hamlin, selected the artists and their work with a specific theme in mind: "Holding the Line certainly refers to the linear qualities of most textile materials such as thread and yarn but also expands beyond the customary associations of textile objects -- clothing, domestic linens, women's work. Artistic work in the realm of fibers puts forth the maker's point of view, often taking a stance whether the principle be cultural, psychological, environmental, or political. This work merges the refinement of technique with the individual voices of these nationally-recognized artists." This summer exhibition includes the work of Miyuki Akai (MFA 2006), Kristina Goransson (MFA 2008), Dawne Hoeg (MFA 2001), Elaine McBride (MFA 1998), Arlene McGonagle (MFA 1998), Paula Erenberg Medeiros (MFA 2012), Linda Senechal (MFA 1998), Myra Serrins (MFA 2002), Jodi Stevens (MFA 2010), and Emily Wolf-Walker (MFA 2009). The exhibition is timed to coincide with Convergence, the biennial conference of the Handweavers Guild of America, July 14-19 in Providence, RI.
