2014 Art History Seminar Class presents and exhibition about the Swain School of Design's foundation, history and legacy. CVPA Celebration: May 3, 2014 12:30 pm - Welcome, Dean Adrian Tio 12:45 pm - The History of Swain School of Design. Lecture by Professor Anna Dempsey (Art History) The exhibition tells the story of The Swain School of Design, founded by William W. Swain in 1882 in New Bedford MA. During its century-long existence, Swain fostered a community of artists who contributed to New Bedford's educational, cultural and commercial institutions. Although the school merged with Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1988, it has left an important legacy. Swain alumni, faculty and students helped to catalyze and support New Bedford's economic and cultural revitalization. Swain: A Creative Community will feature a wide range of works from the artists and educators who contributed to Swain's diverse history—and to its legacy. The exhibition, curated by senior CVPA students from UMass Dartmouth, under the direction of Professors Anna Dempsey and Allison Cywin, is a tribute to the Swain teachers and artists who helped to transform the culture, education, and economy of the historic whaling city and the Southcoast MA region. The exhibit will also give an opportunity to reunite Swain alumni and inform the general public and surrounding community about how The Swain School of Design influenced New Bedford today. Swain alumni will reunite on Saturday, May 3rd for an alumni reception that features opening remarks by CVPA's Dean Adrian Tio at 12:30 pm, a gallery lecture by Professor Anna Dempsey at 12:45 pm and a visit to the 2014 MFA Thesis Exhibition at the Star Store at 4:30 pm. The May 3rd event will help raise funds for a CVPA student scholarship.
