Artist Statement: Jean Herman is primarily a fiber artist using fabric, stitching, paint and other techniques to create art quilts that often read as paintings. She likes to say, "I paint with fabric." Jean also uses various print making techniques incorporating them into her fiber pieces. Her quilts can resemble collages, incorporating paper, photo transfers, and monoprints to create a visual image. Jean likes working in a series; developing pieces that build on each other. Whether it's an individual piece or a series, spontaneous or deliberate her goal is the same, to create an emotional response. Jean was trained as an scientist and went unto a career as a business executive and CEO of the Denver/Boulder BBB. She retired from business to pursue art fulltime in 2009. Jean studied art at: The Cincinnati Museum of Art De Cordova Museum, Lincoln, MA, Colorado Springs Fine Art Center The Art League of Houston Student Art league of Denver The Student Art League of Denver She has attended workshops conducted by nationally and internationally known fiber artists Mickey Lawler, Susan Shie, Cass Holmes, Melody Randall, Jo Fitsell, Carol Watkins, Judith Trager, Ann Johnston and Carol Watkins. Jean is a member of The International Quilting Association, Front Range Contemporary Quilters, Professional Artist of StudioArt Quilt Associates, The Fiber Art Association, and The Student Art League of Denver. Jean lives and has her studio in a loft in downtown Denver.
