Jean Stamsta (nee Nagel) passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday morning, October 2, 2013. She was 76 years old. Jean was born in Sheboygan on November 2nd, 1936, the daughter of the late Hebert and Lucille Nagel (nee Malwitz). She married Duane Stamsta in Sheboygan on August 17th 1956 and recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Jean and Duane recently lived in Monches, WI. Jean received a B.S. & B.A. Art Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is renowned for pioneering the art of tubular weaving. She created imaginative, colorful landscapes and still-lifes, often combining fabric, paint, mirrors and glitter. With her beginnings as a fiber artist, she has exhibited nationally and internationally in London, Switzerland, Hungary, the Netherlands and Finland. She also contributed to her art by teaching. Some of the schools she taught at were Mount Mary College, Alverno College, University Wisconsin Milwaukee, Haystack School of the Arts and Penland School of the Arts. She was the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts, Craftsman Fellowship Grant in 1974. Jean also received the Wisconsin Visual Art Lifetime Achievement Awards by the Wisconsin Visual Artists and the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in 2012. The award honors those individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to the creation, support and growth of Wisconsin arts. Jean's art work also have been placed in the collections of many public institutions, including the Milwaukee Art Museum, American Crafts Museum in New York City, NY, Arkansas Art Center, Museum of Fine Arts in Columbus, OH, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 2009, Jean and her husband Duane generously donated a large collection of fiber works and paintings to Kohler Foundation in Kohler WI. The textile works in the collection were created with wool, cotton and other natural fabrics, and most of the fabrics were hand-dyed. The paintings are acrylic, some including mixed media, on handmade paper or canvas. After conservation treatment Kohler Foundation gifted portions of the collection to the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Racine Art Museum, Carroll University, Edgewood College, and Alverno College in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Anyone interested in Jean Stamsta's work would be well-served to visit the Carroll University Graduate Center in Waukesha, WI. Carroll made a strong commitment to Jean's art when they populated the new Graduate Center with fiber pieces.
