artist_biographical note:
artist statement For years I was primarily involved in creating woven sculpture and teaching in the Fiber Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Evanston Art Center in Evanston, IL., and at the Wolverhampton College of Art and Design in England. At the present time most of my work is in clay. My earlier clay forms while studying at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI., and the University of Illinois at Champaign was a more conservative approach to working in wheel thrown forms. At this time the clay has been influenced by the direction of the fiber and has taken on a more sculptural shape. This design direction of the clay allows the decorative to blend with the practical. These stoneware pieces fired at high temperatures often have a woven or drawn aspect that connects them back to the textiles. The large serving pieces are sculptural but at the same time work well with food. And the low relief wall hung pieces expand even further on the sculptural possibilities. At the present time I am teaching clay classes in Chicago and the studio work continues to be a balance of clay, fiber, and mixed media. Inquiries are always welcome and visits can be arranged by contacting me via the contact page. It is also possible to arrange for programs to be given in the studio or at a location.
