description:
I often find myself intrigued by the private and intimate connections of couples. My curiosity is especially piqued by the dormant thoughts that often go unsaid in relationships, the anxieties we humans feel the uncertainties we cannot seem to let go of…the emotions we refuse to share. How often have we asked our loved ones "What's the matter?" only to hear a simple and insignificant "Nothing". How I hate this word "Nothing". It is such a tiny word, yet so powerful in its ability to disguise the truth. Artifice: Disclosure is a response to the frustration I feel when thinking of these experiences. In this piece, two people tug at two strings that weave through the middle of a silver structure capable of sliding back and forth on a set of rails. A balloon is connected to the structure by the same strings. This apparatus is an artificial communication device. The balloon, which has red and black writing on its surface metaphorically linked to the red and black strings acts as a sort of "thought bubble" and represents the materialization of a couple's innermost thoughts and emotions. There is no hiding of thoughts from this device, the resulting "thought bubble" is true and honest. As the individuals tug back and forth at the strings located on either side of the object, the balloon bobbles through the air, indicative of the turbulent nature of thoughts that go unsaid. This balloon is also highly translucent, increasing the already vulnerable atmosphere around it, which is then further increased by the balloon's gradual loss of air shrinking, as it slowly loses its breath and inevitably becomes the wilted remnant of a conversation long since past.
