description:
Artifice: Exchange is a device that both facilitates and hinders the act of "eskimo kissing" bumping noses as a means of affection. With its two handles, this object suggests a cooperative interaction between two individuals. From either side of the object, the users exchange breaths by blowing air onto a vertical disk that houses a mesh-like fabric membrane, propelling it like a sort of "sail". This act of exchanging breaths in turn pushes a soft, feathery element attached to the top of the disk across a rail gently bumping it into the nose of the other person. For me, the significance behind this somewhat whimsical conversation lies within the contradictory element of the intimate exchange of air. While the object itself takes the act of intimately engaging in a physical connection and obstructs it, to a high degree it also acts to amplify intimacy in a completely intangible capacity through the use of the breath. By breathing directly at one's counterpart within this device, the user inadvertently chooses to exchange breath with them, a highly intimate act veiled by its lack of palpable presence. The elaborate construction of this object, with its structured, heavy gauge wires, attempts to emphasize the importance of the breath in hopes of authentically exchanging one act of intimacy for another.
