description:
This self-portrait is drawn in three-quarter profile and looking down. The body slightly turns to the left. In this drawing, I want to explore one aspect of identity; the thinking of where I come from and where I will go. The characterization of beauty for traditional Chinese woman, is elegance, beauty, perfection, grace, and purity both physically and psychologically. I always appreciate this kind of beauty, which is deeply rooted in my thinking and behavior. The western woman situation developed by the feminist movement grants more independence, freedom, and self-awareness than the eastern. But I still can see the pressure, fragility, and hardness on both sides of women in their general life style and in the 'Women's Movement'. I am thinking about what kind of woman I will be with a blend of between eastern and western, and what kind of struggles I will have to bear in this society, though that struggle has already begun. The self-portrait emerges out of the lotus pattern, as the central, cultural iconography -shapes that leads the water form into becoming a meaningful new experience, which makes me define the lotus pattern not only describe traditional Chinese feminine attributes, it has more fresh meanings for women in contemporary society.
