description:
Light Matter 3. The anonymous figure is seen from behind and above and close. A cruciform shadow dissects the back in the soft part between the ribcage and the pelvis, and the figure warps it significantly. The ground plane and figure are more perpendicular and more perspectival than the previous paintings. This image is the most gendered, despite its analytical origins, and it seems to elicit uneasy emotions. The composition reads dramatically. Instead of just bending in response to the light, the figure appears to be responding submissively to the gazeor perhaps even having been pushed downsetting up an axis of aggression and vulnerability on either side of the picture plane. This unintended domination of the viewer sexually is strengthened even by curating the painting as on the floor, leaning against the wall, such that the viewer is looking down on the back. I want the protagonist of this series to possess a sensually-realized body as a component of wholeness. In my naiveté, I simply wanted the figure to be presenting her back as a canvas for the grid of light and shadow. But, as to the guilt this access may conjure, I will leave the responsibility to deal with that to said viewer.
