description:
Because, Doctor, A Single Number is No Indication of my Vaginal, Reproductive or Sexual Health (I Wont Get on Your Scale) is a tribute to my rejection of the scale. I used strawberries specifically as symbol of romance and sexuality in reference to my OBGYN who never asked about my sex life and who, when I asked her to take out my IUD, blatantly alluded to her skepticism that I ever truly needed it. The vagina-like fragment makes reference to a comical conversation I had with her in which she insisted I get on the scale to be weighed because she could not asses my overall vaginal, sexual and reproductive health without that number. I explained my choice not to monitor weight as an essential part of my ED recovery and an integral to my physical and mental health. When she sarcastically said Well, maybe your mental health, I told her that if the only way she knew to examine a vagina was with a scale, Id prefer a more qualified OBGYN. This absurd story occurred just this year and was the first time I had the courage to both self-advocate and end an appointment when I felt uncomfortable or mistreated. This sculpture brings a similar message the installation as my pill sculpture, but with a more overt skepticism of medical professionals, and the practicing of my right to self-advocacy.
