description:
This sculpture is the embodiment of a series of stories and bad experiences with medical professionals. These personal experiences with the alienation and harm a doctor's well-meaning, but ultimately devastating words and actions can create informed the creation of this piece. This sculpture is a critique of a fatphobic health care system, recognition of the complexities of pills as an agent of both self-harm and healing, and the message that everyone needs help and has the right to be heard when they ask for it. No patient should have to prove their worthiness to be treated. Fat patients are too often met by doctors who do not take our symptoms seriously, blame us not only for our illnesses by using our weight as a diagnosis rather than take the time to thoroughly assess our unique bodies, and it is unacceptable. Health is not something you owe your doctor any more than weight loss will make you healthy. Everyone gets sick, regardless of size, and every single person deserves a thorough, trustworthy doctor to listen to them when they are. This piece was made in both anger and celebration. Anger at a fatphobic medical industry that caused so much pain, and celebration of the moment it personifies; the moment I threw every pill I'd collected saved over the years as my reminder, my safety net, my anger and my resentment into this sculpture. This piece is about self-advocacy within a biased medical system; it is about substance abuse, mental health, and not giving up on getting the help that can change your life.
