In 1932 Hoffman immigrated to the United States, where he resided until the end of his life. Hofmann played a pivotal role in the development of Abstract Expressionism.

Hans Hoffman has taught in Munich and in the United States including Berkeley, New York, and Provincetown among other places. In 1933 he opened the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts at 137 East 57th Street in New York.
