exhibition_note:
The exhibition, Jim Peters: On Stage, brings together a wide range of work from 2000-2009. Using his skill as a virtuoso painter and draftsman, Mr. Peters creates two dimensional illusory space which he often skillfully integrates with three dimensional constructions made of found materials, wood, glass, wire, and discarded metal. The theme running throughout the work is unabashedly sexual with depiction of figures in beautifully crafted, cramped and crude theatrical spaces. Jim Peters' canvases and constructions are fecund arenas of marathon struggles where the work goes through months or years of elaborate mutation. Mr. Peters says "my work is a constant revision, changing and honing images until fantasy and reality meet." Jim Peters was born in Syracuse, NY, in 1945. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD in 1967 (BS, Atomic Physics), and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA in 1969 (MS, Nuclear Engineering). He began painting while serving on the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy and, using the G. I. bill, graduated from Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, MD in 1977 (MFA, Painting). Jim Peters has exhibited regularly since then, and received many honors and awards. His work is in many collections and museums worldwide.
