The Sabbatical Exhibition at the CVPA Campus Gallery showcases four UMass Dartmouth faculty and the results of their investigations into their creative process. Richard Creighton, Alma Davenport, Jim Lawton, and Cathy Smilan went in depth to explore their personal artistic inspirations as well as the themes and concepts that drive their artwork. Richard Creighton's exploration concerns the abstraction of objects of antiquity, particularly American, European and middle Eastern Powder Horns and their relevance in the 21st century. He is a Professor and Interim Chairperson of Fine Arts Department as well as mixed media artist exhibiting both regionally and nationally, with work held in numerous private and select institutional collections. Alma Davenport's paintings are representations of the farming landscape of the Gaspe Peninsula, Quebec, Canada. Professor Davenport was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant (2013/14) to create the watercolor paintings. Alma Davenport (RISD 70/75) is a Professor of Fine Arts and lives in southern Rhode Island. Jim Lawton has been on the Ceramics faculty of the Artisanry Department since 1998, and lead the design & move of the program to the Star Store campus in New Bedford in 2001. His studio practice is made up of two intersecting paths - sculptural/functional vessels and large scale architectural works in ceramic. In the Sabbatical Exhibition, Lawton will present two bodies of work: wheel thrown/wood-fired vessels made during a residency at the International Ceramic Research Center: Guldagergaard in Skælskør, Denmark; and the selected proposal to the Slocum's River Project including one of the elements to be installed at the site in South Dartmouth in May of 2015. Cathy Smilan is Associate Professor of Art Education and MAE Graduate Program Director. Her intradisciplinary sabbatical work focuses on utilizing Art-based Research techniques in art education and addresses the inquiry questions: 'How does childhood play form adult reality?' and 'How does consumerism and visual culture impact identity?' Her current research investigates role-play and gender roles and how childhood play translates to adult lived experiences.
