artist_biographical note:
Terrie Hancock Mangat asked for fabric for Christmas when she was 6 years old. She majored in Printmaking and Ceramics at the University of Kentucky and graduated with honors in art in 1970. She taught art to grades 1 through 9 at the Lexington School while her husband finished medical school. Inspired by the Kentucky Scrap bag quilts, Terrie began making quilts as soon as she graduated from college. She has an established reputation as one of the most important embellishers making quilts at this time. Her complex compositions draw upon the power of pattern, have multiple focal points, are partially realistic and partially abstract, and are comprised of a myriad of materials and objects in addition to fabrics, including buttons, beads, stones, charms, paint, and photographic representations. Terrie's quilts appear in private, corporate, and museum collections, including the collections or Ardis and Robert James, John Walsh lll, Lincoln Insurance Co, St. Mary Cathedral, Amarillo, Jewish hospital, Cincinnati, Cleveland teaching hospital, Cleveland, Ohio. Her quilt Dashboard Saints: In Memory of St. Christopher was chosen as one of the Best 100 Quilts of the 20th Century. In addition to making quilts Terrie draws fabric designs, teaches, hikes, and grows a garden. She has two children, Lauryn (also an Artist) and Kishen (a businessman and father of 2), Kishen is married to Lindsay Black Mangat, and they have two adorable boys, Vincent and Desmond, who both have lots of quilts.
