Description
Nothing on reverse. "Hindu prisoners" Before the war, the Indian government had decided that India could afford to provide two infantry divisions and a cavalry brigade in the event of a European war.140,000 saw active service on the Western Front in France and Belgium - 90,000 in the front-line Indian Corps, and some 50,000 in auxiliary battalions. They felt that any more would jeopardise national security. These divisions and brigade formed the Indian Corps and the Indian Cavalry Corps that was eventually sent to the Western Front in 1914. The high number of officer casualties the corps suffered early on had an effect on its later performance. British officers that understood the language, customs, and psychology of their men could not be quickly replaced, and the alien envir

WWI_French_Postcard_"Bonne_Année"___Wishing_All_My_Flickr_Friends_a_Bang_up_New_
Description
In this hand-tinted French photographic postcard, which was published in Paris, a small boy dressed in the traditional French uniform of the early days of WWI wields his toy rifle while he crouches behind a small cannon decorated with roses and daisies. The greeting at the top of the card - "Bonne Année" - is French for "Happy New Year." I am unable to translate the verse at the bottom of the card nor can I translate the message dated 1916 on the reverse. Any help would be deeply appreciated. A Note on the French Uniforms of WWI: In 1914 uniforms, equipment, and tactics for the average French infantryman had changed little since the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. Troops still wore the traditional red kepi, red trousers, and a conspicous blue greatcoat - very dashi

Description
Letter on reverse dated 4 Mai 1915 but postally unused. A pair of Landsturm infantrymen and a Militärebeamte stand between a makeshift cemetery and a stretch of barbed wire entanglements located in Rabosée-Barchon Belgium. The helmet grave markers indicate the buried are men (officers) from 5. Westfälisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.53 (14th Division). During World War I, the Division served on the Western Front. It participated in the initial German drive through Belgium and France, including the Battle of Liège and culminating in the First Battle of the Marne. After a period of trench warfare in various parts of the line, the Division went to Verdun in 1916. During the 1918 German Spring Offensive, the Division fought in the Third Battle of the Aisne. Allied intelligence rated it a seco

Brandhoek_Military_Cemetery_Nr_Poperinge
Description
During the First World War, Brandhoek was within the area comparatively safe from shell fire, which extended beyond Vlamertinghe Church. Field ambulances were posted there continuously. Until July 1917 burials had been made in the Military Cemetery, but the arrival of the 32nd, 3rd Australian and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations in preparation for the new Allied offensive launched that month made it necessary to open the New Military Cemetery, followed in August by the New Military Cemetery No 3. Brandhoek New Military Cemetery contains 530 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 28 German war graves. The burials are of July and August 1917 and among them is the grave of Captain Noel Chavasse, VC and Bar, MC, one of only three men who have won the Victoria Cross twice. The cemetery
